2014 O.G.T. Syrah Blend – Magnum (93-95 Vinous; 94-96 The Wine Advocate)
As many of you know, the OGT Syrah is named for our son, Oliver Gunnar Tensley. We’ve been making this wine since he was born, in 2003, and each year we set out to make an OGT that is as delightful, imaginative and complex as our son himself. In 2014 we were working with some of the deepest, most complex fruit we have seen to date. Conditions had been dry and hot and harvest was early and fast.
While that made for hard work in the winery, it also made for one of the best OGT’s to date. The tried-and-true blend for this wine is 50% Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah, 25% Tierra Alta Vineyard Syrah, and 25% Thompson Vineyard Syrah. The Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck calls the OGT, “massive and textured,” while Vinous’s Anotonio Galloni writes that it is, “superb, intense, powerful and explosive.” Look for Colson Canyon’s signature flavors of blackberry, leather, and chocolate to be balanced by the red fruits, floral notes and spice of Tierra Alta and the earthiness, acidity and tannic structure of Thompson. This wine is drinking great now but is sure to mature well over the next ten to twelve years, much like Oliver himself.
